FUMIGATION PROCESS FOR EXPORT FURNITURE

Fumigation is a mandatory condition for goods or their packaging that may have issues with insects (termites, ants, cockroaches, etc.) which can cause damage or avoid contamination that changes the properties of the goods before export. For example, items originating from wood (bamboo, rattan, handicrafts), wood packaging (wooden pallets), or organic products (rice, coffee, nuts, etc.). Let’s find out the fumigation process for export furniture.

Why is fumigation necessary for furniture before export?

Fumigation Process

Around us, there are many products (wooden tables and chairs, bookshelves, notebooks, etc.) that need to be carefully maintained to avoid insect intrusion. Export goods are no different, as they undergo a long period in containers, which is a favorable condition for destroying the goods. Without preventive measures, significant damage can occur.

Due to the nature of goods being easily infiltrated by insects

Export goods are shipped in a closed environment, at around 40 degrees Celsius, and undergo a long duration (15 days or more), making it suitable for rodents and harmful insects to infiltrate. This can reduce the quality, compromise hygiene safety, and alter the appearance of the goods.

Strict regulations of importing countries

Countries that highly prioritize environmental protection and health safety create barriers for imports, such as Australia, the US, the EU, Japan, and South Korea. Post-COVID-19, these countries have further tightened fumigation requirements to prevent virus transmission. Thus, many countries have laws mandating fumigation to protect their interests.

To keep packaging clean

Wooden packaging like crates and pallets used for packing ceramics, machinery, parts, etc. Fumigation helps clean and prevent contamination, avoiding damage (from insect infestation) during transport.

Fumigation Certificate for furniture

A fumigation certificate is proof that goods have been fumigated. This certificate is issued by a fumigation organization. It’s advisable to choose a quality service provider, with expertise, and consider consulting with freight forwarders and brokers with agents in the importing country for verification.

Documents required to issue a fumigation certificate

  • Commercial Invoice
  • Packing List
  • Bill of Lading

Information needed to issue a fumigation certificate

  • Report location, item name, quantity (FCL/LCL/AIR)
  • Specific timing, contact person, importing country
  • Scan or fax standard Bill of Lading (HAWB) to the fumigation company for certificate issuance
  • Receive a copy of the certificate, check the information, and confirm its accuracy
  • Receive the original certificate and make payment if required.

After fumigation, the complete set of documents must be sent within 1-2 days.

Fumigation Methods for Furniture

Currently, there are many units responsible for fumigation, making it easier. This activity usually occurs quickly and does not take much time. However, caution is necessary to avoid unnecessary errors causing property damage.

Fumigation can be done in many ways, with two main popular methods:

  • For loose cargo: Directly spray chemicals onto the cargo.
  • For goods contained in a closed space (container, ship’s hold, warehouse): Inject gas chemicals and seal. No need to extract the chemicals until the goods reach the importing country. This is the most common method used by many businesses. However, some cases are not applicable, such as consumer food items and other products as regulated by the state.

Fumigation Cost: 300,000 – 500,000 VND/pallet, depending on the type and concentration of chemicals used.

Common Issues with Fumigation

Goods not fumigated

This basic error usually occurs due to forgetting fumigation, no request from the importer, or the exporter forgetting, service unit forgetting, or the driver not bringing the goods to the fumigation location.

  • Solution: Have a clear process, assign specific tasks to each stage, review, and check the process before exporting.

Incorrect chemicals used

Using the wrong chemicals can lead to inadequate fumigation or not meeting the import country’s chemical regulations.

  • Solution: Carefully check before fumigation. Confirm from the fumigation coordinator to the technician. After fumigation, reconfirm between the fumigation worker and the coordinator.

Improper, low-quality fumigation

Due to irresponsible work by the organization, lack of skill, or fraud.

  • Solution: Use a quality, highly specialized, and dedicated service unit.

Fumigation certificate not accepted

Incorrect format, wrong information, unsigned or unstamped certificate, damaged or heavily torn certificate, or illegible content.

  • Solution: Carefully check the documents before sending them to the importer.

Property damage can be significant, such as shipment cancellation, import country fees, and risk of loss due to these errors. Therefore, to avoid basic mistakes in receiving fumigation certificates, we must be careful during the process and avoid unnecessary mistakes.

Conclusion

Understanding and adhering to the fumigation process is crucial for protecting export goods, especially those prone to insect infestation like furniture. By following strict regulations and choosing reputable fumigation services, businesses can ensure product quality, meet the stringent requirements of import markets, and minimize asset damage. Proper implementation of this process not only safeguards goods from pests but also keeps packaging and cargo clean and uncontaminated. Thus, mastering the fumigation process is a key factor in achieving success in international trade and maintaining a positive reputation with global partners and customers.
