EXPLORING MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT

Each mode of transportation has its own unique advantages. However, it’s not always feasible to transport goods using just one mode. So, what exactly is multimodal transport? Let’s explore this concept with Smart Link in the article below.

What is Multimodal Transport?

Multimodal transport, also known as combined transport, is the process of moving goods using two or more different modes of transportation. Despite utilizing multiple modes, this process operates under a single contract.

International multimodal transport involves shipping goods from a domestic location in one country to a domestic location in another country, requiring the combination of at least two different modes of transport.

Meanwhile, domestic multimodal transport is applied within Vietnam’s territory, yet still requires the use of at least two different modes of transport.

Modes Constituting Multimodal Transport Include:

  • Road Transport
  • Sea Transport
  • Rail Transport
  • Air Transport
  • Pipeline Transport (commonly used for oil, gas, etc.)

Characteristics of Multimodal Transport

  • Multimodal transport must include at least two or more different modes of transportation.
  • Companies engaged in multimodal transport operate as trustees, not agents of the shipper.
  • These companies take full responsibility for the goods throughout the transportation process, regardless of the mode of transport used.
  • However, the level of responsibility for each specific mode of transport may vary, depending on the agreement with the shipper.

Benefits of Multimodal Transport

Multimodal transport plays a vital role in international trade, as it offers substantial value, including:

  • Reducing logistics costs and ensuring timely delivery, which helps lower product prices for consumers.
  • Expanding the network of goods transportation between countries, allowing the shipment of large or oversized goods.
  • Enhancing competitive pricing advantages for manufacturing businesses.
  • Enabling businesses to quickly access international markets through a widely connected transport system.
  • Promoting cooperation between governments and businesses; reducing unnecessary paperwork during the transportation process.

Common Types of Multimodal Transport

  • Road-Rail Transport (2R): This method combines road and rail transport, offering the high mobility of road vehicles and the heavy-load capacity of rail transport. Goods are loaded into trailers and transported to the station by truck. At the station, the trailers are loaded onto trains to continue the journey to the destination, and then delivered directly to the recipient by truck.
  • Road-Air Transport (R-A): This type combines the safety and speed of air transport with the flexibility of road vehicles for goods pickup and delivery. Trucks handle the transportation of goods from the warehouse to the airport and vice versa, while airplanes are responsible for transporting goods along intermediate routes.
  • Air-Sea Transport (A-S): This method combines the speed of air transport with the low cost of sea transport, making it suitable for high-value or seasonal goods. Goods are shipped by sea to ports, then transferred to airplanes for quick inland delivery.
  • Mixed Transport (2RIS): This involves a combination of rail, road, inland waterway, and sea transport, forming a globally popular multimodal transport model. Once goods arrive at the port, they continue to be transported to the recipient using various modes of transport, suitable for containerized goods and routes that are not time-sensitive.
