Shipping company RCL buys the largest container ship ever
Regional Container Lines (RCL) has bought its largest ship ever in its first acquisition of the old ship.
Thailand, Thailand’s intra-Asia shipping line Regional Container Lines (RCL) said that its Singapore registered subsidiary Regional Container Lines Pte Ltd purchased the APL Norway vessel with a capacity of 6,310TEU built in 2007 from the supplier. The Japanese ship Shoei Kisen Kaisha is priced at 940.71 million THB (equivalent to 31.2 million USD). The APL Norway has been repaired. The vessel has been leased for a long time by APL – a subsidiary of CMA CGM – since the ship was built by Koyo Dockyard.
- Before purchasing the APL Norway, the largest ships in the RCL fleet were Racha Bhum and Sattha Bhum with a capacity of only 2,732 TEU. RCL is known as a shipping company that seeks charter vessels up to 8,000 TEU capacity for its shipping network.
- VesselsValue points out that this was the first time in RCL’s history when it moved to the old shipping market, as all 38 of its other ships were put into service under new construction.
Alphaliner notes that RCL is among the many operators that have purchased second-hand ships amid rising charter costs.
- “This trend is expected to continue, especially in the context of reasonably priced old assets,” said the container shipping consulting firm. On the contrary, charterers are increasingly finding it difficult to find the boat they need to secure their position, in some cases choosing to buy ships over charter.
