WHAT IS MSDS? DETAILED MSDS CONTENT

In import-export activities, especially with food products, there is an important term known as MSDS. So, what is MSDS, and what does it contain? Let’s explore this with Smart Link through the article below!

What is MSDS?

MSDS stands for “Material Safety Data Sheet.” It is a document that provides information on the properties of a specific chemical to ensure the safety of those working with or exposed to it, even for short periods.

MSDS applies to goods that may pose risks during transportation, such as flammable or corrosive substances. This document helps transporters handle the goods safely, from loading and unloading to emergency situations.

Even for products like supplements or cosmetics, which are not considered hazardous chemicals, MSDS is still required during air transport to ensure safety. The product ingredients must be checked to prevent any risks to handlers.

Since September 1, 2015, aviation security at Tan Son Nhat and Noi Bai airports has mandated that items such as supplements, creams, liquids, powders, and water-based cosmetics must have an MSDS to be exported. Only when customers provide sufficient documentation can the goods be cleared for export, with no exceptions for international courier companies such as DHL, FedEx, TNT, UPS, etc.

Functions and Purpose of MSDS

In addition to providing safety guidelines for handling chemicals, MSDS serves several other important functions, including:

  • Helping businesses implement safe transportation measures, ensuring efficient handling and incident response.
  • Warning of potential risks when using or transporting chemicals if procedures are not followed.
  • Providing workers with the necessary information to handle chemicals safely.
  • Assisting businesses in creating a safe working environment and ensuring proper safety equipment is provided, as well as serving as a foundation for employee safety training.
  • Supporting the management of emergency situations by identifying signs of issues and measures for response.

What Does MSDS Include?

A standard MSDS sheet typically includes the following key sections:

  • Chemical Composition: Lists the names of the chemicals in the product and CAS numbers to accurately identify the chemical substances.
  • MSDS Issuer: Provides information about the person or organization responsible for preparing the MSDS, such as name, address, phone number, and the date the document was prepared.
  • Product Information: Includes the chemical components, chemical formula, and other related product information.
  • Physical Properties: Describes the product’s physical state (solid, liquid, gas), pH, boiling point, etc.
  • Fire and Explosion Hazard: Information about conditions that may cause fire or explosion and the preventative measures.
  • Chemical Reactions: Information about the product’s reactivity to environmental factors such as temperature, light, and humidity.
  • Toxicity: Details the level of danger posed by the chemical to humans and the environment, along with treatment methods in case of poisoning.

Who Prepares the MSDS?

Typically, the shipper, manufacturer, or distributor is responsible for preparing the MSDS. Some important points to note when preparing an MSDS include:

  • The MSDS must be complete and accurate, in line with relevant documentation.
  • It must be stamped by the manufacturer or distributor to confirm its legality.
  • When shipping goods, the MSDS must accompany the shipment to pass through international couriers. If not properly documented, the goods may be detained or fined according to legal regulations.
