Company History

ONE Shipping Company was established on July 7, 2017, through the merger of three major Japanese shipping companies: K-Line, MOL, and NYK. The merger aimed to optimize operations and enhance competitiveness in the global shipping industry.

ONE was formed as part of a broader consolidation within the container shipping industry at the time, driven by poor profitability and excess capacity.

The merger created the sixth-largest container shipping line in the world at that time.

ONE began business operations in October 2017 and started trading in April 2018, with its corporate headquarters in Tokyo, global headquarters in Singapore, and regional headquarters in London (Canary Wharf), Richmond, Hong Kong, and Sao Paulo, and local offices in 90 countries.

In August 2018, ONE placed an order for over 14,000 refrigerated containers.

In December 2018, ONE and PSA International agreed to establish a joint venture at the Pasir Panjang Terminal in Singapore to operate container activities, starting in the first half of 2019.

ONE decided to paint all its newly launched ships and container equipment in a striking and recognizable magenta color. This magenta hue is inspired by Japan’s cherry blossom trees, representing the home country of its parent companies.

ONE Shipping Company’s Container Fleet

At its inception, ONE’s fleet consisted of 240 container ships, including 31 vessels with a capacity of about 14,000 TEU or more, and 6 ships with a capacity of 20,000 TEU. As a result of the merger, the company also inherited container ship orders from its predecessors, including a super-large 20,000 TEU vessel and twelve 14,000 TEU ships (such as the large container ship Minato Bridge).

ONE boasts an extensive network with transport routes connecting major ports worldwide. The company provides container shipping services to and from Asia, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania. ONE operates a modern and advanced fleet, ensuring efficient and safe transportation of goods.

Major Events

In 2017, ONE joined THE Alliance along with shipping lines Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, and Yang Ming. This alliance operates 241 ships, calls at more than 1,150 ports, and has a total capacity of 3.3 million TEU.

On April 2, 2018, the ONE Minato ship underwent a trial run from Imabari Shipbuilding. The vessel has a capacity of 14,000 TEU and is painted magenta.

On May 15, 2018, the first magenta-painted ship was added to the fleet. The ONE Commitment embarked on its maiden voyage from Singapore and arrived at the Yantian International Container Terminal in China, with a total capacity of 8,560 TEU.

On June 12, 2018, the newly built and launched ONE Stork set sail. The ship has a capacity of 14,000 TEU and is painted magenta. This was the first ship to carry cargo to the Northeast Coast of America.

On July 7, 2018, the ONE Competence called at the Port of Oakland. The vessel has a capacity of over 8,000 TEU.
